Body measurement guide for shirts & jackets: how to measure using an inch tape
To ensure a flawless fit for both shirts and jackets, follow this step-by-step guide using a flexible measuring tape. This ensures that every commission is tailored specifically to your unique silhouette.
Rules for Accurate Measuring
Use an Inch Tape
Always use a flexible cloth or plastic inch tape (measuring tape). Never use a rigid metal hardware tape, as it will not give accurate body contours.
Write Down Your Numbers
Keep a pen and paper or your phone handy. As soon as you measure a body part, write down the exact number immediately to avoid any mistakes or confusion later.
Keep the Tape Flat and Level
Ensure the inch tape lies completely flat against your skin or lightweight clothing. It must be level all the way around and not twisted.
Stand Naturally
Stand completely straight but relaxed. Do not puff out your chest, stiffen your shoulders, or suck in your stomach. Breathe normally to capture your true everyday size.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Neck Circumference
Wrap the inch tape around the base of your neck where your shirt collar naturally sits. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Insert one finger between the tape and your skin to ensure comfortable breathing room for the collar, then write down the number.
Shoulder Breadth
Stand straight with your shoulders relaxed. Place the inch tape across your upper back from the outer edge bone of one shoulder, straight across to the outer edge bone of the opposite shoulder, and note down the reading.
Chest Circumference
Raise your arms slightly and wrap the inch tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level under your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Lower your arms to your sides and breathe normally, then record the final number.
Waist Circumference
Wrap the inch tape around your natural waistline, which sits right around or just above your belly button. If you are measuring specifically for jackets or low-rise pants, measure around the area where you normally wear your waistband. Do not suck in your stomach and note the number.
Hip Circumference
Stand with your heels together and your feet flat on the ground. Wrap the inch tape around the widest, fullest part of your buttocks and hip bones to get the accurate seat measurement, then write it down.
Bicep Cuff / Girth
Let your arm hang down naturally and relax your muscles. Wrap the inch tape around the middle, fullest part of your bicep (upper arm). Do not flex your arm while taking this measurement and log the number.
Wrist Cuff
Wrap the inch tape around your wrist bone precisely where a shirt or jacket cuff would normally sit. Keep a slight half-finger gap so the garment cuff has enough ease to move, then write down your final number.
